Continuing Professional Development

Continuing professional development (CPD) was introduced at BenchMark in the beginning of the academic year 2017. It ensures that our teachers continue to be competent in their profession. It is an ongoing process that keeps pace with the current standards in the teaching field. Well-crafted continuing professional development delivers benefits to the individual in their profession and in the public.

 Benefits of CPD

  • CPD ensures that you maintain and enhance the knowledge and skills you need to deliver a professional service to your customers, clients and the community.
  • CPD ensures that you and your knowledge stay relevant and up to date. You are more aware of the changing trends and directions in your profession. The pace of change is probably faster than it’s ever been – and this is a feature of the new normal that we live and work in. If you stand still you will get left behind, as the currency of your knowledge and skills becomes out-dated.
  • CPD helps you continue to make a meaningful contribution to your team. You become more effective in the workplace. This assists you to advance in your career and move into new positions where you can lead, manage, influence, coach and mentor others.
  • CPD helps you to stay interested and interesting.  Experience is a great teacher, but it does mean that we tend to do what we have done before.  Focused CPD opens you up to new possibilities, new knowledge and new skill areas.
  • CPD can deliver a deeper understanding of what it means to be a professional, along with a greater appreciation of the implications and impacts of your work.
  • CPD helps advance the body of knowledge and technology within your profession
  • CPD can lead to increased public confidence in individual professionals and their profession as a whole
  • Depending on the profession – CPD contributes to  improved protection and quality of life, the environment, sustainability, property and the economy.  This particularly applies to high risk areas, or specialised practice areas which often prove impractical to monitor on a case by case basis.

    CPD Sessions @ BenchMark

The introduction session of CPD by the Resource Person Mrs. Vineetha (Assistant professor-Unity Women’s College-Manjeri) was conducted on 19/08/2017. The forenoon session covered the following topics.

    • Understanding about professional development
    • Methods to enhance professional skills
    • Importance of the role of a teacher in students’ life at the primary level
    • Different challenges we come across in professional development
    • Importance and role of learning coaches
    • To create a common space to access different teaching resources so that everyone can make use of it.

The session also had a game to understand the different approaches of people to same problem and the strategies which each one takes to solve that problem. The game was then correlated to different class room situations and the teachers found it very useful.

In the afternoon session Mrs. Vineetha spoke to the learning coaches. The learning coaches were given instructions on how to proceed with the CPD process and class observation. In order to have an understanding on different parameters of class observation they were informed to observe their classes within each other and then share their evaluations. The 1st stage of observation which is the pre-observation was conducted on the 1st week of September. Here the classes of primary teachers were observed by the learning coaches in prior, the areas which they feel they are weak. The class observation will be focused more on these weak areas.

The 2nd CPD session focused on class observation and recording of the classes. Live recording of the classes helped the teachers to have an overall evaluation of their own classes. Feedbacks were given to the teachers by the CPD trainer and the learning coaches’ .Teachers got clear idea on the areas of improvement and areas where they are strong.
